Purple socks

Photo #1 is the most colour true ... worn between black cords and black shoes today, these socks practically glowed! This pattern is based on the elements that make up a gansey sweater rather than being a traditional sock ... a split garter welt and plain stockinette band instead of the usual ribbing, the heel is actually half of an underarm gusset (a full gusset is diamond-shaped), fake seam down the back (there is one on each side of a gansey), etc. Plus the diamond, ladder, and double spot stitch patterns are all traditional gansey decorations. One of the best (and entertaining) sites about traditional/modern gansey knitting is Ganseys.com ... the author's wife taught him to knit shortly after they were married and the only thing he's ever made are ganseys, doing a lot of research along the way and sharing it via the various tabs at the top of his blog (he's made good use of his archival profession to investigate some of the gansey myths)
