A lucky day while mooching around the downtown HMV: they had the long-awaited-by-fans Ali and Toumani CD in. Listening right now ... as always, beautiful, beautiful sounds. And sadness, reading the liner notes about the pain Ali Farka Touré was in while recording this last album and his insistence on finishing (he died of cancer in 2006). I do like that, in those same notes, Toumani Diabaté says that they recorded these songs "for our own pleasure first of all, for the pleasure of our families, and for the pleasure of all those who would listen to it." That's the kind of priority list that makes the best music ... the players have to love what they're playing. :-)
