For the lactose-intolerant out there (you know who you are), Vice Cream : Over 70 Sinfully Delicious Dairy-Free Delights will let you indulge in icy treats without painful payment. Even those who can cheerfully chug milk by the gallon might want to try out these recipes!
Pirate alert! David W. Shaw reminds us, in Sea Wolf of the Confederacy, that not all pirates were in the Caribbean. A gem for those who love the odd bits of history that got left out of the school textbooks.
On the science side, there's The Great Beyond : Higher Dimensions, Parallel Universes and the Extraordinary Search for a Theory of Everything, by Paul Halpern. The evolution of and "fashions" in theories can be just as fascinating as the theories themselves ...
Finally, a cornucopia of delights for tommdroid ... I've catalogued three or four books from R.D. Bartlett's "Reptile and Amphibian Keeper's Guides" series lately and it looks as if many more will be crossing my desk in future. :-)))
In other related news, over the past couple of weeks the cataloguer has tested the trial version of (and purchased last weekend) a new, extremely customizable, home cataloguing software called BookCat, and has been happily copying over her old data to the new system (has to be done record by record, since neither of these systems uses the professional MaRC standard ... but this way I'm catching typos and updating subject headings). For the time being, I'll still maintain the old OYC freeware and data, should somebody want a copy of my booklist (or movielist or musiclist) ... theoretically BookCat should let me put this stuff in my Web domain and my friends will be able to access it that way. :-)))) As a bonus, the new software lets me catalogue e-books with a working link ... I'm thrilled 'cause it means I can look up a subject, see if there's an e-book on it and get on with looking up what I want to know, instead of the old system of scrolling though the online booksite and guessing content from the titles. :-))))))))))
P.S. If anybody out there has a particular topic they are interested in, let me know. I'll post the information on any relevant book that crosses my desk.
