Natural selection in a nutshell ...

There's a male robin outside, loudly and steadily proclaiming the courtyard as his territory even though it's now completely dark outside. Despite his energy and determination (he's obviously in good shape to keep it up so late), I wouldn't put any money on his reproductive success ... with a population of at least two squirrels per tree, plus the regular magpie patrol, he's gonna find out the hard way just WHY this prime patch of turf has stayed unclaimed and untenanted by robins for so long ...
