Urgle ...

Inventory all day Friday, inventory this morning, with the all-done, you can all go home sounded at 1:20 p.m. I ended up leaving around 2:30 p.m., after spending the intervening time playing surgical nurse to IT's digging around in my computer ... it had crashed sometime Friday night, blocking me from signing in from home over the weekend, and then proceeded to refuse to load security updates and crash twice more in the space of 1 hour while I was adding up book counts. With everybody out, it was actually quiet enough to be able to tell that the fan wasn't running and the poor thing was overheating; IT had one spare fan that turned out not to be compatible once the patient was opened up, so that was no good ... then several large areas of corrosion were spotted on the motherboard, which meant even if the fan were okay, it was still gonna need follow-up work in the very near future. So now it's totally degutted and I get to work on the labelprinting computer in the corner tomorrow (the backup machine being already in use due to hard-drive death at another cataloguing station)

On the bright side, once I get the beast back, it shouldn't give any trouble for a VERY long time, what with having a nearly full set of new innards. And at least I still get a little bit of our company-paid reward time. :-)
