There are magpies carrying on in the courtyard. May not seem like a big deal, but the courtyard (and all of Calgary) has been scarily magpie-deficient for the past year. There has been a nasty and frequently fatal virus (not West Nile) working its way through the population ... one of those cycles of nature things (interestingly, it wasn't affecting the crows). So hearing multiple voices "rattling" out there, warning the squirrels that the vacation is over, and seeing iridescent black/white plumage strutting around on the grass makes me smile all over ... I've missed those gorgeous birds.
