A few days ago ...

... I mentioned hat I was in the process of rereading Caroline Mytinger's "Headhunting in the Solomon Islands Around the Coral Sea", a wonderful book I found in a secondhand shop many years ago. I was pleased to discover that the book was back/still in print when I made that post, as most of these old treasures are forgotten. I did make efforts to find out more about Mytinger (and her companion, Margaret Warner) a few years ago but pretty much drew a blank, aside from finding copies of the book for sale by used book stores online. Today I decided 'twas time to make another try and was rewarded by this site: Headhunt Revisited. Not only are the dynamic duo of Mytinger and Warner not forgotten, their "Expotition" has been re-enacted!

I'd always assumed that, because "Headhunting" was published in 1942, Mytinger and Warner set off on their journey during the Depression (an impression reinforced by the team's money concerns even before leaving the U.S.); thanks to this site I now know not only that the start date was much earlier ... in 1926 ... but that the author and artist was the original model for Charles Dana Gibson's "Gibson Girl"! Wow! (take a look at the photos of her on the site and the facial resemblance is very obvious) To top it all off, Mytinger wrote a second book about continuing her portrait painting in New Guinea, titled "New Guinea Headhunt" ... this one, sadly is not listed at Amazon.ca, but you know me ... I'll find it ...

I DO love a good fix of info about a GOOD book. :-)
