Listening to the world ...

My favourite radio station, CKUA, has revamped their Web site, making all kinds of new goodies available to listeners. Since so many of you enjoy a wide range of music, thought you might enjoy seeing their everchanging CD Hotbox, giving samples from the CD of the Week a listen, or browsing through the musician interviews in the Audio Archive.

For those not in the know, CKUA is a very unusual radio station. It's been broadcasting for 75 years, and has held onto every piece of music, in every format, making theirs the largest music library in North America, containing every style of music that you can imagine, plus more. The station has 17 transmitters (most only have one), so that it can be heard all over Alberta, as well as in parts of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Montana. The staff maintain all their old equipment as well as adding new, so that they can still play all formats, and they DO: 78s, 45s, LPs, cassettes, CDs, MP3s (I've never heard any announcer mention 8-track tapes, but I'm sure they have a few AND the equipment to play 'em on). The station collects and plays music from all over the world, plus they've had people WILL music collections to them, so the library is ever-growing and full of things you will NEVER hear on any other radio station (I've even heard DJs play the demo tapes of new bands they consider worthy, and bring in obscure items from their personal music collections to play and share with the listeners). And yes, if all this intrigues you, you CAN listen to their broadcast online via the main link above.
