Background for non-Canadians: Stronach and Brison "crossed the floor" (our term for changing political parties) shortly before an election, with publicly stated valid reasons for their defections, and with their timing giving constituents the opportunity to vote them out almost immediately. Emerson crossed right after the election, with no good reason given other than that Harper offered him some power, which means that his constituency that voted overwhelmingly Liberal now has a Conservative representative and are stuck with this misrepresentation until the next election. During the Dec. 2005/Jan. 2006 campaign, Harper (and the Conservative Party) made government accountability and honesty one of their main platforms; now Harper is trying to claim that as Prime Minister he's not accountable to the Ethics Minister.
If this keeps up, we should have a nonconfidence vote and the Liberals back in power in no time. And, hopefully, somebody will find a way to stick Harper with the bill for wasting the taxpayers' time and money. :p
