The Librarian

Finally ...

... screwed up my courage and watched Alien Planet this weekend ... it's something I've been dithering about for a very long time, as I've owned and loved Wayne Douglas Barlowe's Expedition since it was first published and was simultaneously dying to see his alien ecosystems in action and scared that I'd be disappointed. But when I found the DVD in HMV at a bargain price, I decided to take the plunge. And I watched it a second time immediately after credits rolled on the first viewing ... it was VERY well done! (thanks to Barlowe being one of the executive producers, so he had a fair amount of control over what happened to his creation)

Not all of the creatures could be fitted into the film ... the polar portion of the expedition was skipped entirely ... and the "plot" was changed from a manned exploration to an entirely mechanized remote one, but these were changes that worked (and viewers who hadn't read the book wouldn't know the difference anyway). Definitely something to watch again and again and again. :-)

P.S. And if you haven't read the book, seek it out ... 'tis a marvel!
