Too busy reading most likely ...
An unusual day ...
Greeted at work this morning by the news that multiple servers were down and IT were in and working on it. Oh joy! We keep virtually nothing on our PC drives ... they exist merely to house the individual copies of various programs. Everything is in the various network drives on the servers. Did such tasks as I could do sans server access but that well ran dry by 10:00 a.m. So since I have a ton o' overtime hours banked that I need to use up and word from IT was that it was likely going to take most of the rest of the day to get the servers running again I got the okay to go home.

So YAY!!! Picked up some lunch stuff on the way and settled in to read the second half of "Convergence" (got halfway through last night)

And now I'm done and it was SO GOOD!!!!! and I have to wait a whole year to see what happens next with the multitude of new plot threads set up in this volume. Lots of Uncle Tatiseigi (who knew he would have become so loveable?), Bren and his aishid have crossed the strait to the human "reservation" (Tano may need an intervention as he's discovered a human food even better than pizza), and the joys of trying to get useful and practical things done fast before committees can spontaneously form and bog everything down ...

I love it when there is sudden free time during a work day, to read a good book!

Well it distracted me from wondering just how much data we had lost. For a while, anyway. We were hacked but, happily, only Wednesday data lost (they hit a couple of hours before the Wednesday night backup) and for once my department's database was unscathed (probably due to being in marc format which most programs can't recognize) ... once we had access again we discovered that the Wednesday stuff in there was intact! Company website finally back up today but still blocked from remote access.

Yes and no ... see my reply to sealwhiskers above. Went in on Friday and learned that we'd been hacked, so that day ended up, half the time, into a communal training session on how to use the other cataloguing software (which I have been NAGGING people to start learning and NOW they know why) to rebuild what had most likely been lost (later turned out not to be lost in my department's case but the practice was good for 'em and I got a couple more how-to documents written, illustrated and ready to post to our webpage once I had network access again). Since the company website was still down on Sunday night (which meant that likely anything else I needed to get at would also still be off limits) I phoned in Monday morning and said I'd be taking the day off since I'd finished all the work it was physically possible for me to on Friday and there was no point in me being there to do nothing. Good call on my part as things only began to go live in the mid-afternoon. So able to operate quasi-normally yesterday and nearly normal today. Now just hoping to get remote access back soon because big deadline projects have lost nearly a week of work (thank goodness we were somewhat ahead of schedule before this happened)
