Mary Hough has designed (by my count) at least 76 Burgess Shale sock patterns, each one's pattern named for and inspired by a different critter.

And then (also on my favourite designers list), in other sciences, there's Very Busy Monkey's Scientists, Scientists 2, Astronomy, Metallurgy, and Precious Stones shawl collections. Plus her unnamed first collection which contains Bernoulli, Coriolis, Irish Moss, and Logwood

There are a lot of scientists and engineers (male as well as female) who knit or crochet as a hobby and quite a few of them design as well. ;-) (my favourite online knitting group recently spent a couple of days discussing the evolution of computer programming over the last half-century)
