Ah well ...

Had to get past the initial pointy end and until I could work some rounds with the full number of stitches but I was right: not going to get any good colour pooling 'cause the scarf is just too narrow (a smaller circumference than a sock) so I go around more than twice before the colours start to repeat; I could create the right conditions for colour zigzags within the structural zigzag by increasing the number of stitches in the scarf circumference but that would eat yarn and greatly decrease the length of the scarf (I only have one skein of this so the scarf ends when the yarn ends, the scarf has to end). While there is some stacking of the yellow on one side (the yellow occurs twice within the colour sequence), the overlap is minimal and the pooling is horizontal ... same effect that I disliked with the other yarn.

I think I'm going to have to get another skein of this yarn in a neutral dark and then find a pattern that will let me use the two together for a nice stained glass effect. Like this. Or maybe something doubleknitted like this
