Too busy reading most likely ...
Just had a raven sitting and calling in the tree beside my balcony. Obviously in nest-building mode as it was working on breaking some dead sticks off the branch between calls. First time I've seen a raven in Calgary ... they're normally higher up in the mountains proper (a common sight when I lived in the Crowsnest Pass) or else in the forested north third of the province. Will be fun to watch 'em if they're going to hang around. Also a hopeful sign of local corvid recovery as a very nasty virus several years ago decimated our crow and magpie populations and I only started seeing those regularly in this neighbourhood again last summer. If ravens are moving down into the foothills that could mean their usual territories are all repopulated. Wonder if the magpies will teach them how to play squirrel tennis?

Squirrel tennis requires a squirrel, a tree and at least two magpies. Magpie #1 hops along the ground, harassing squirrel until it runs up tree to escape. Magpie #2 is stationed at top of tree and harasses squirrel up there until squirrel goes back down to ground to escape. Repeat until bored or squirrel is no longer in play (it catches on and refuses to budge from middle of tree until magpies leave)
