Got new long cables in the mail a couple of weeks ago and finally got this poor scrunched up thing threaded on one of them last night ... so now I can actually see what I'm doing again (scrunched is okay to knit but hazardous in a complex pattern like this in that not being able to spread out your work to look at it as a whole occasionally means mistakes can hide until you're 50 rows past them ... undoing that much labour HURTS). wasn't too sure about this colourway when I started ... it's way outside of my usual zone but it's been growing on me and I quite like it now. I confess I originally bought it for the name: "Squid Snackin' Barbie (Hastily Recalled Edition)" (we have weird daylight today ... all the older photos here are more colourtrue than this one)

Wow! Just flipped the page on the pattern to see how many more rows I have left and I'm actually nearing the finish line! 106 rows completed, row 113 is the bind-off!

The secret all knitters know: there are only two stitches and the most complicated-looking stuff is usually easy to do (some of the simple-looking things are actually the trickier constructions). It's all just math and engineering.

Cables are just stitches knitted out of order every few rows; in this case instead of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12, one does 4 5 6 1 2 3 10 11 12 7 8 9 every eighth row (whether you hold the stitches you're temporarily skipping in front of or behind the stitches you're knitting determines which way the cable twists ... in this case 1 2 3 went in front while I knitted 4 5 6, 7 8 9 went behind while I knitted 10 11 12)

Lace: you just wrap the yarn around the needle between two stitch and on the next row you knit that wrap as if it were a stitch. Instant lacy hole appears.
